Both the male and female Libellula pulchella have three black patches on each wing; the males also have two white patches per wing. The abdominal stripes on these form a solid line - the female whitetail has an interrupted line. As with many other dragonflies, the males develop a pale pruinosity on their abdomens as they mature.
